What it is

If you’ve rented your home from a council or housing association for at least 3 years, you can buy it at a discount that grows the longer you’ve been a tenant. Worth flagging: the maximum cash discount was cut sharply in November 2024, from a flat nationwide figure down to a smaller amount that varies by region, so older guides online will overstate what’s actually on offer now.

Source, and a plain disclaimer

These figures are GOV.UK, Right to Buy discounts’s own published terms, last checked on 5 September 2026, and may have changed since. Check the official page before relying on any of them, and speak to a whole-of-market broker or your local authority about whether you’re actually eligible. This is not financial advice.
